I was in Northwest Oklahoma City framing a house I heard the blast after I found out what happened, went home and turn on TV and I noticed they was evacuating all the rescue workers in the Merle building saying they found another bomb. I can’t quite remember if I was in math or history class, but I’ll never forget how beautiful the day was—just a clear, blue sky and bright sunshine [exactly like 911 in NYC]. Tinker has documented use of Directed Energy Deposition, a laser/electron-beam additive manufacturing repair process. ES3 says it implemented DED repairs at Tinker for TF33 engine compressor spacers and compressor case repair. A 1998 Air & Space Forces article says the Air Force began a study called Directed Energy Applications for Tactical Airborne Combat, led by AFRL’s Directed Energy Directorate at Kirtland AFB. It also notes earlier USAF airborne laser work in the early 1980s using a laser-carrying KC-135 that shot down missiles/drones.
