Very interesting map! Thank you for assembling all of this data! I was born in Jacksonville Florida in June of 1964 and have lived in the NE Florida area all of this time. I have told people for years that this is this area of Florida is the least likely to experience a direct hit. We have had some very close calls. The gulf stream is a huge factor in brushing off and leading the storms away from the coast here. If a storm does get on the west side of the stream they ride up the coast just off shore and we get hit with the left side of the storm. So we are not completely immune. You couldn’t pay me to live in the Panhandle of Florida great place to visit but too many direct hits for me.
My mother remembers the 1938 hurricane. She and her mother, and grandmother were living in Newport RI. The wind pushed storm surge up Narragansett Bay, and right up into Easton’s Bay at Newport, which narrowed and narrowed, and squeezed all the water up higher. They could see it from shore. It built up to a 50 foot wall of water, and then hit the shore. Her mother was trying to drive back to Aquidneck island, from the mainland, using the bridge at Tiverton. She drove across the bridge, and onto Aquidneck. In her rear view mirror she saw the car behind her vanish as a wall of water hit the bridge.
You only are looking at hurricanes on this map but if you add tropical storms you’ll find the blank spots aren’t as blank as you think and some tropical storms can be as devastating as hurricanes if they sit in one spot to cause floods. Then there was Sandy she was a hurricane she was so devastating that she changed the coastline even if she was down graded to post tropical which in my opinion should never have happen because it made people think she wasn’t dangerous so instead of evacuating the coastline they stayed home and when she landed in New Jersey she was still a cat 1 with 80 mile winds it was combination of tides and her landing but they discontinued the storm warnings and people relaxed and because of her they keep the warnings up until the storm either dissipates or lands so another Sandy doesn’t happen.

Not listed here — because it didn’t make landfall — is the single most studied (by Navy planes flying thru its eye) was the Monster Class-3 Hurricane ERIN on 11 Sep 2001. It was birthed by HAARP on Ascension Island, then driven up towards NYC, making a time-delaying detour (for evaluation, testing of the HAARP control, presumably), then bee-lining and made to sit still for the entire day of 911 just 200 miles east, thus providing a massive atmospheric power source needed by the weaponry that dissolved the WTC. If you find THAT outrageous, wait until you learn about the particle beam fired from Brookhaven “RHIC ion-gun” that sits precisely 61.1 miles from WTC at an angle of 119-degrees and is headquartered in building #911 on the BNL campus. And if you think THAT’s outrageous, wait until you learn about Fermilab “ion gun” being precisely 666 miles from Murrah building in OKC which was apparently a ‘test attack’ of the weaponry prior to the big event in NYC. Learn about HUTCHISON EFFECT. Pull right off of USAF mil site — USAF “owning the weather by 2025” — and refute or admit that all major weather calamities are either allowed or caused.
Brevard Co. Florida (Space Coast) stretches seventy something miles north to south, on the east coast. It includes the entire Cape Canaveral and down well south of it. So, according to your map, it has only been hit twice, in 1880 and 1915. Looks almost hurricane-proof from there to Savannah, as far as landings. Bermuda Triangle covers that area, presumably to fear-monger so divers do not go looking for the sunken booster rocket shells. Just a diabolical thought…
I haven’t scanned all the comments, but no one seems to be making much of a fuss over Hurricane Agnes in 1972. Perhaps, like Sandy, it was officially downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it made landfall, but it parked over that big empty spot in the mid-Atlantic coast and dumped buckets on Maryland for days on end. The flooding was epic. It deluged huge coastal areas, took out multiple bridges and wrecked the track of the Northern Central Railroad (which ran from the north Baltimore suburbs to York, PA and which is now a terrific bike trail), and turned the upper Potomac River into a raging torrent that left picnic tables twenty feet up in the trees at Great Falls.
Agnes, it is said, was fomented to cause chaos and distraction in DC area during the height of the Watergate (guffaw, Jesuit mockery!) fiasco. DE”WISH” ORGanization has a big write-up on it.
On Texas not having a Cat 5…. The 1900 Storm (1900 – One), was almost certainly a Cat 5, probably an intense Cat 5 offshore similar strength to Camile in 1969, and a nominal one at actual landfall. The storm is officially listed as a 4 because the roof blew off the NWS office along with all the instruments over an hour before the eyewall made it onshore and the last reading recorded was 120MPH before the roof was lost. The lowest barometric pressure reading that was recorded a bit later was 27.64 inHg was well within Cat 4 range, but that reading was taken over 25 miles from where landfall occurred and outside the eye. If you look at the pictures and old charts of the damage from the official reports of the time, the impact was truly exceptional. It was almost certainly a strong 5 at some point that day or before as it crossed the Gulf, and very likely was at least nominal Cat 5 intensity at landfall. BTW… I hope you’re wrong and we never get a 5 making landfall in Texas again… the devastation today with the millions more people living along the coast, and economic impact to the country… it would be a very bad thing for everyone.
