A military Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) was used, partly to test, partly to foment dread, partly to ‘bookend’ American manufacturing era, partly to defraud insurance. Nothing else known can jellify or disintegrate: turning massive steel into shreds, chunks, confetti, powder. The beamed energy likely also imparted super-gravitational effects and/or an insta-boiling of the water, simultaneous disintegrating and rapid-sinking the Mighty Fitz. All evidence is best and fully explained by this mechanism of metal-destructive DEW, and no other theory yet proposed so completely describes all evidence. The only correct theory must describe all known — and yet to become known– evidence; otherwise, by definition it is false.

It seems highly plausible that an electromagnetic burst — or series of them — could cause repulsion amongst the iron pellets as well as severe, violent crumpling, distortion and dismemberment of the fully-secured hatch covers noted in all reports. It would be super interesting to evaluate the magnetic properties of the taconite.
